Domestic violence represents a serious violation of basic human rights, a denial of equality between men and women, and of innate human dignity. The fact that violence occurs in the family of the victim and in the victim’s home – the place which should provide security and support – further aggravates the position of women exposed to violence and makes them more vulnerable. It is also one of the key underlying reasons why the state must introduce mechanisms that will ensure timely support and protection of survivors.
